Silviculture and conservation of wood land soils: strategies for carbon sequestration
The main aim of SuoBO is to promote the conservation of the soil organic matter (SOM) and
consequently the carbon sequestration in forests of the RER region. In this view, there is a need to
develop analytical protocols to evaluate the quantity and quality of the SOM to understand its
vulnerability in the investigated areas. The project will focus these issues in specific farms that are
available to collaborate with experts of the Universities of Ferrara and Bologna together with
technicians of the forest sector provided by Consorzio Futuro in Ricerca and Confagricoltura Bologna
s.r.l.
Define the operational plan, establishing synergies between the partners. Preliminary investigation in
the selected farms to understand their silvicultural practices. Soil and biomass sampling and
determination of parameters useful for the calculation of the carbon stock. Determination of indices of
SOM quality and its benchmark, and measurement of GHG emissions to define the carbon footprints.
Dissemination and training for farmers (and also of common people) on the importance of sustainable silvicultural practices aimed to preserve forest SOM, in order to minimize GHG releases.
