PEI-AGRI

Reduction of ammonia emissions from heavy pigs with diets supplemented with benzoic acid

Obiettivi
Objectives

The goal of the GO is to evaluate the effectiveness of benzoic acid in further reducing ammonia
emissions when added to standard or low-protein diets and to evaluate how prolonged urine
acidification can lead to an alteration of the bone metabolism of animals.

Activities

IMPLEMENTATION OF DIETS SUPPLEMENTED WITH BENZOIC ACID
The trial will be conducted on 2 experimental groups of pigs. There will be 2 cycles: a winter cycle,
with standard protein content diets, and a summer cycle, with low-protein content diets.
MEASUREMENT FROM THE GROWING STAGE
It will be measured the emissions of ammonia and the odors, from the barns of pigs fed with the
addition of benzoic acid to both the standard and the low-protein diets.
MEASUREMENT OF NH3 EMISSIONS FROM THE SLURRY SPREADING
The ammonia emissions in the agronomic use of slurry will be assessed for slurry derived from the
untreated pigs and from those fed with benzoic acid as supplement, for both standard and low-protein
diets
