Test and validation of innovative tools at low input for the protection of sugar beet grown under organic and integrated farming protocol
The project general objective is to test and validate techniques of crop protection and preventive
measures for the sugar beet crop grown organically, based on agro-ecological approaches aimed at
reducing the use of plant protection products while concurrently improving the quality of water
resources. This agro-ecological approach relying on cover crops, on the adoption of preventive defense strategies against the main phytophagous, advanced mechanical weeders and wider crop spacing, will promote crop functional bio-diversity, benefitting farm ecosystem services, soil quality and fostering water savings.
Main project activities are the following:
a) Control of major insect pests (wireworms, weevils, pigmy beetle) in the sugar beet crop;
b) Weed control in the sugar beet crop grown organically: study of hoeing implements exerting their
activity also on the row, with concurrent test of variable row spacing;
c) Analysis of the results including the environmental sustainability evaluation of the best practices, in
view of their introduction into the integrated and organic cropping protocols.
The project also includes the Operative Group management, and an articulate plan of dissemination
(videos, meetings, web site, handbook of best practices).
