Grazing and grass to support a model of sustainable development for the mountain areas of the Parmigiano Reggiano area
The Operational Group involves the agri-food chain of the production of the Parmigiano Reggiano
PDO in the hilly and mountain areas of the district. The traditional fodder systems managed through
the haymaking yard nowadays are thrown into crisis by the climate changes that negatively affect the
amount and the quality of the hay produced.
The aim of this OG is to study the best practices that can enhance the grazing and, more generally, the use of green grass, to characterize the productions throughout the different segments of the supply chain and to promote the consumer awareness.
The Operational Group aims to evaluate with a comparative approach the management of the
haymaking yard used in primary production dairies with 2 alternatives related to the use of fresh grass in feeding: grazing and fresh mowing used in the feed lane. The comparative systems will serve to provide insights into the quality of production, the quantity of forage produced, the economic
calculation of the management models as well as the environmental footprints derived from the use of the different management types of feeding the cows. Agronomic and grazing tests and production
characterization will be conducted
