Stinging nettle supply chain: rediscovery and valorization for the agro-food production of the Emilia Romagna region
Stinging nettle, a plant species with multifunctional characteristics, may be easily introduced into a
complete supply chain.
The general objective of FILODOR is to develop process techniques of the entire production chain of
stinging nettle, from cultivation in the field to the formulation of innovative food products with healthy
characteristics. The specific objectives include: 1) Verification of agronomic adaptability and
evaluation of the nutritional and health properties of stinging nettle accessions grown in various areas
of Emilia-Romagna; 2) Formulation of innovative products 3) Creation of a supply chain among the
different actors.
The project (duration of thirty months) is divided into the following activities:
1) Collection of local stinging nettle ecotypes and cultivation in pilot field plant
2) Field trials related to the identification of the most interesting genotypes in terms of agronomic
performance, nutritional and health-promoting properties
3) Chemical, biochemical and nutritional analyzes of the agricultural product and derived food
products
4) Transformation tests and panel tests of stinging nettle-based products
The project is completed by the managing activities of the Operating Group, feasibility studies and a
detailed plan for disseminating the results.
