Active management of the surface water and shallow groundwater for controlling salt water intrusion
The project aims to provide information and operational tools (new modules in the DSS IrriNet
managed by CER) to Reclamation Consortia and farmers located in coastal area of the Emilia-
Romagna Region, for improving the management of irrigation water in order to reduce salinity in
water and soils, as well as enhancing the yield of rice as a resilient barrier for marginal agricultural
areas. The economical and environmental impacts of wetlands and channels will be estimated through the effects analysis of water management in critical areas.
The main activities of the project will consist in evaluating the water leakage effects of the Gronda
channels and wetlands to control brackish groundwater upward seepage and soil salinization. At the
same time, scenarios will be produced, through hydrological models, to optimize water management,
also to prevent, in some areas, a reduction of soil depth available for crops, due to subsidence. Through field monitoring and modeling, two new modules on IrriNet, for leaching requirement and irrigation scheduling of rice, will be calibrated and validated.
