Establishment of a supply chain that can enhance the production of ancient cereals in internal areas
The general objective of the project is the establishment of an organic supply chain that will work on ancient wheats population. In a small area of Forlì-Cesena and Rimini provinces, all the phases of seed production and those related to the use of ancient wheat will working together. The aim of the project is the maintenance of ancient wheat population, (result of research developed in the last years by scientific institutions with the collaboration of seed companies and some farms), and basing on it, to increase income for all the components of the supply chain.
The following activities will carried out:
- evaluation of the potential development of ancient wheats based on market trends,
- definition of a seed reproduction protocol to guarantee the maintenance of the characteristics in a population of ancient wheats especially regarding the percentage report between the varieties that make it up,
- application of a traceability system to the wheats population and control of grain quality characteristics
- definition of an agreement that can establish the commitments for each component of the supply chain
- planning of the crops to avoid excesses in the offer that could cause a lowering of the prices reducing the marginality.
The final result will be the spreading of the BIOADAPT cereal population and higher advantages for all companies involved on its multiplicationn, processing and selling. The intermediate results will be:1. Definition of technical cultivation lines for the BIOADAPT population for the production of certified seed and / milling wheat. Agronomic aspects and control methods of the crops will be defined to ensure that genetic pollution does not occur. 2. Supply chain agreement involving all companies interested in the "certified seed production" and " milling wheat" lines. 3. Standard contract between the seed company and the farm which defines the parameters on which to base the remuneration of the seed. Standard contract between the mill and the farm which defines the minimum quality parameters on the basis of which wheat can enter into the supply chain path and establishes a price base on which to calculate the payments for the farms. Data relating to the behavior of the population in the farms where it is multiplied to allow evaluation of the stability of the seed. 6. Characteristics of the wheat in the various batches produced in order to assess the level of homogeneity of the flours that will be sold.7. Economic evaluation of the convenience to join the BIOADAPT wheat chain, based on the real yields of the companies and on the difference in the prices paid
