Sustainable enhancement of Camuna viticolture
The aim of the project is to develop a survey of viticultural zoning which, through the study of the vine-environment interaction, identifies the different vocation of the territory. This will allow to define, in an appropriate and scientifically based way, the most suitable agronomic and oenological strategies for each of the local areas that make up the IGT Valcamonica, with particular reference to resistant vines.
Pedological and climatic investigation, phenological investigation. Realization of grafts at the partner farms of the project. Implant of collections of vineyard varieties. Microvinification at the Fojianini Foundation's wine cellar in Sondrio, for the evaluation and characterization of the wines obtained.
It should be point out the important role that belongs to the viticulture in the Lombardy Alpine valleys where, in addition to the production of wine, it plays a role in the safeguarding and maintenance of the land, that is very often located in conditions of high slope. In addition it has an important social role in preserving the inhabited areas from hydrogeological risks on the slope, and the tourist value linked to the food, wine and sports sectors. For these reasons it is important to enhance the wineries in these areas, through wine and oenological management studies to optimize their profitability and stimulate potential investors.
The Val.So.Vi.Ca. project implements plan for the valorization of Valcamonica area, that is the study of viticultural zoning of the Camunian reality, implemented with the evaluation and comparison of new vine varieties of potential economic and environmental interest.
It is therefore appropriate to identify the strengths of the different areas, also considering the added value of the varieties resistant to fungal diseases, concentrating the viticultural and oenological expenses for high quality wines which are identifiers of the Camuno area. This will also lead to to an increase in the number of bottles for the most appreciated wine types by the market, thus offering themselves to the public with a more considerable price for the average consumer. With this method it is possible to increase company profitability due to lower management costs both in the vineyard and in the transformation, with a more solid sale on the market. We want to promote sustainable and competitive viticulture, in harmony with the natural resources on which agriculture depends, and we want to have strong positive effects on the territory, companies, the landscape, tourism.
The project aims to identify guidelines from a production point of view with choices of vine variety, combination of grafting, proven and verified agronomic and oenological techniques, that are the most efficient in relation to the different viticulture areas of the Camunian area. This will allow us to trace an unique common thread that represents the image of the wine produced in Valcamonica. It must be: - equipped with certain quality characteristics, - has a low environmental impact, - has a source of economic revenue for those who produce it and for those who communicate it, - has a driving factor to increase the food and wine tourism sector in Valcamonica.
Varieties tolerant to fungal diseases in mountain conditions will also be tested, as they could have significant environmental and economic potential. Sustainable vitiviniculture models will be developed through the Valcamonica viticulture zoning investigation, integrated with the study of varieties resistant to the main fungal diseases. The collected data will allow to draw up guidelines for the definition of agronomic and oenological models for each of the environments and it will be possible to delimit the areas of different vocationality that will allow to define the best wine type for each of these environments. This will allow wine makers to have scientific support in the fundamental choices in the planting of a new vineyard, reduce production costs, increase the quality of production, improve marketing and, ultimately, the sustainability over time of the Camune wine cellars.
