Forests – Local Enhancement and Added Value of Environment and Education
The aims is to enhance the multifunctional role of the forest, to promote the development of forest areas and to improve the resilience of the forest with respect to forest fires, hydrogeological disturbance and climate change. With reference to economic effects we expect to improve profitability margins and to diversify forest’s products and services with possible impact on youth employment.
- Inventory of potential uses and determination of the value of use for each sub-area within the farm land (€/ha per year), subsequently subjected to GIS mapping;
- Creation of a “Community of the Forest” (L.R. 39/2000) and of a “Forest School” as an innovative tool to diversify farm activities, to integrate timber and energy sector and to experience a new business cooperation;
- Design of a multifunctional business model, of a network model and of a new certification “Friends of the Forest”

In Pistoia Mountains the relevant fragmentation of woodland ownership endanger the proper management of forestry resources, increasing hydrogeological and fire risks. The lack of an integrated management endangers the provision of ecosystem services. There are two problems strictly connected to fragmentation of ownership:
- existence of information asymmetries such that smallholders have insufficient information about wood market, timber sector organization, value chain and alternative uses of forestry resources (touristic, recreational, environmental, educational);
- absence of a network of smallholders, agricultural holdings and local stakeholders which could enable the sharing of information on a forest management based on shared goals of local development and sustainability.
Promoting the enhancement of forest multifunctionality,through:
