PEI-AGRI

Terroirs and RUral Networks for Technological and Organizational Innovations addressed to Organic Farms

Obiettivi
Objectives

The project, involving the areas of two regional bio districts, Bio Venezia and Colli Euganei, in line with the emerging organic farm needs, seeks to pursue the following priority objectives:
1. Improving, both technically and economically, the supply of organic products by increasing their agro-ecological profiles and production efficiency;
2. Strengthening the composition and the identity of bio districts through the inclusion of more organic farms or farms in conversion;
3. Increasing the organic farm profitability and competitiveness, reducing the "bureaucracy" of firms participating to the project

Activities

The main activities of the TERRITORI BIO project are: the creation of the Center for Guidance, Propulsion and Coaching (COPA); channeling of experiences from the other national bio districts; enhancing of environmental and agro-ecological aspects; development of e-ticketing and technical service, to solve farm organic problems; creation of web site and organization of technical meetings with the aim to promote and disseminate farming innovation; creation of economical and social sustainable model for COPA; valutation of environmental aspects of local products and organic territory; promotion and valorization of biological products placement; monitoring and assessment of project output.

Pratice abstract
Description

The TERRITORI BIO project is aimed to fix the problems that emerged in organic and conventional farms located in the two Bio Districts of Veneto Region. The problem that the OG is trying to solve is actually associated with the skepticism of many conventional companies to shift to organic agriculture. In fact, many conventional farmers do not know farming techniques and organic pest management methods. Accordingly, conventional farmers' main concern, with regard to organic conversion, is the potential reduction of the production yield and, therefore, the incapability to get a satisfactory price premium from the market or to improve their competitiveness. The innovative solution found by the OG is the creation of a COPA (Center for Guidance, Propulsion and Coaching) within and over the two Bio Districts. The identification of the problems is also accompanied by a range of solutions and innovative responses that the companies themselves have identified in concert with other territorial actors. It will give rise to a multifunctional center dedicated to the preparation and the provision of various services, like development of e-ticketing and technical service, to solve farm organic problems; creation of economical and social sustainable model for COPA; valutation of environmental aspects of local products and organic territory; promotion and valorization of biological products placement. COPA should be able to accomplish growth and development of organic farms and farms in conversion, improving their competitiveness as well as their ability to seize market opportunities and to look for new ways to produce income.

Description

The main problem the OG of Territori Bio aims to solve regards the general skepticism of conventional farmers towards organic agricolture due to scarse knowledge about coltural techniques and diseases control, inducing the fear of excessive yield reductions and insufficient income. For this reason, farmers need to be guided to optimize production techniques, giving particular importance to agroecology, so to get a satisfactory income while being aware that converting to organic is more than just changing farming tools. Therefore, the OG seeks to (a) improve quality and yield of organic farms operating within the areas involved in the project; (b) induce the increase of the organic land so to reduce the impact of pesticides and to improve agri-environmental conditions of the Veneto Orientale and Colli Euganei areas; (c) Guide organic farms to increase their competitiveness trough a technical and economical assistance service; (d) reduce the existing gap between demand and offer by increasing the production of organic products to satisfy a growing demand trend; (e) favor the conversion to organic farming by providing information about market trends and structure and streamlinig the related bureaucracy.

Description

The project PAGO TERRITORI BIO aims to favor the conversion to organic as well as to solve technical/economical/organisational issues by directly assisting farms trough this path. The GO identifies with the BIO DISTRICT the key tool for the project running and created the COPA (Center for Guidance, Propulsion and Coaching) specificly to sustain organic farmers growth and development. COPA is an innovative tool as it represents a new territorial governance model with the dual goal of involving the maximum number of firms possible and providing them services in the context of an effective and 'short' transmission belt between supply and demand. The COPA's action can be summarized in three main activities: (i) "Guidance", to help farmers in taking the most effective strategic decisions while interacting with the other agents involved in the same economical, social and institutional scenario; (ii) "Propulsion" aimed to transmit information about structural and operational peculiarities of the Bio District actors; (iii) "Coaching", to promote the overall development of the involved farms within the area of Colli Euganei and Veneto Orientale and to favor the adhesion of new companies to the organic farming model. The latter objective will be reached by providing a omni-comprehensive service including technical, economical assistance while favoring the diffusion of good agronomical practices.
