Diagnostic techniques, spatial distribution and management of resistances of the main plant pathogens, insect pests and weeds towards plant protection
Resistance is a challenge for every phytosanitary product (insecticides, fungicides, herbicides). Also in Emilia-Romagna many resistant species to several active ingredients have been detected. The increasing of chemical applications to oppose this problem rises water contamination risks as well as sanitary risks for farmers and general public. To prevent resistance development, it is very important to get diagnostic tools and to analyse the regional area where it’s detected resistence and to characterise it, to trace its spread as well as any retreat following resistance management strategies adoption.
New and original procedures and protocols to detect resistance development against new phytosanitary product families in pathogens, pest and weeds will be validated. It will be evaluated the possibility of M. persicae and D. suzukii to select resistance mechanisms against new insecticides when they undergo to a heavy and artificial selection pressure.
Different management strategies against weeds will be evaluated with an economic point of view and a prototype for herbicide impact reduction and application optimisation will be developed.
The realization of the plan through an epidemiological approach will allow to acquire information on the extent of the phenomenon of resistance and its characteristics in Emilia Romagna. The identification of risk resistance molecules will allow to implement the best anti-resistance practices at the level of the productive fabric. The plan will assess the overall success of the most common management practices adopted by companies to combat and manage weeds in major cropping systems and to propose improvements to increase their effectiveness and economic and environmental sustainability. In summary the expected results will be:
1)New and improved diagnostic techniques to detect resistance to phytosanitary products in economically important pests for Emilia-Romagna crops (Aphis gossypii, Tetranychus urticae, Drosophila suzukii, Venturia pyrina, Stemphylium vesicarium, Plasmopara viticola).
2)Evaluation of a longterm sustainability of the use of new insecticides against Myzus persicae e D. suzukii.
3)Tuning and verification of the efficacy of a prototype for “in row” post-emergence herbicide application in summer crops. Benefits will be:
a)procedures as well as new techniques developed during the project will be available to phytosanitary services and to any other subject involved in plant protection by protocols useful for routine application to improve pesticide resistance management strategies;
b)information about the cost of different weed resistance management strategies.
