Best practices for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions on organic farms

Obiettivi
Objectives

The aim of the project is to identify the environmental impacts related to: 1) cultivation of some organic fruit (apple, pear and peach), grown at different levels of environmental care; 2) organic milk, mainly in terms of greenhouse gas emissions (kg CO2eq - Global Warming Potential), through the application of life cycle assessment (LCA, ISO 14040-44: 2006), for the purpose of identifying and quantify those practices aimed at mitigating GHG emissions and increasing carbon sequestration from agricultural production (from the cradle to the farm gates).

Activities

1) Estimation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in organic orchards.
2) Estimation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the breeding of fresh organic milk.
3) Estimation of carbon sequestration in the soil.
4) Evaluation results for the identification of best emission mitigation practices.

Pratice abstract
Description

1 - Estimation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in organic orchards
For all the cases studied (3 fruit and at least 3 farms each) we will be provided with the environmental indicator GWP-Global Warming Potential (kg CO2 eq / kg product per hectare) detailed for the main categories of impact (plant, farming operations, irrigation, fertilizers , agrochemicals, fertilizers emissions from the use, transport and waste).

Description

2 - Estimation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the breeding of fresh organic milk
It will calculate the environmental impacts related to the production of fresh organic cow's milk of the farm CAB Massari in terms of greenhouse gas emissions (kg CO2 eq - Global Warming Potential) divided into the main categories of impact (enteric emissions, managing manure CH4 manure management N2O emissions by fertilizers, agricultural machinery for energy, food purchased, technical means).

Description

3 - Estimation of carbon sequestration in the soil
Comparison of the results of some forecasting models in relation to the carbon dynamics in soil (emission / sequestration), with the same input data, in a sample farm.
Calculation of the carbon stored in the soil for 3 types of fruit crops, according to the model selected as the most suitable to the environmental conditions of the production area.
Validation of simulated data with measured data.
Calculation of carbon dynamics in soil for several different agricultural practices management scenarios.

Description

4 - Evaluation results for the identification of best emission mitigation practices
Based on the oucomes of the project, will be developed good practices for mitigation of emissions can be easily transferred to the fruit sector and organic livestock.
