PEI-AGRI

Integrated Systems for teh environmental Sustainability of the Vineyard

Obiettivi
Objectives

The management of the production process in viticulture on a farm scale requires the farmer continuous strategic choices in order to optimize the quantitative and qualitative yields by limiting the effects of the biotic and abiotic factors of resistance to production and optimally exploiting the potentialities of the physical environment and organic offer. The farmer therefore needs to acquire all the necessary and useful information to make the best decisions. The goal is to provide the farmer with the most suitable tools to have a valid decision support system so as to reduce the treatments, thus increasing the quality of the product and the environment.

Activities

The project includes:
- the definition of operational procedures for obtaining and archiving geo-referenced field and remote sensing information for the mapping of the phenological / physiological status of the vine with a view to precision viticulture, to the benefit of sustainability;
- the creation of a system for the supply of a service to the winemaker based on this information, able to direct its cultivation practices in quantity, position and timing;
- dissemination of knowledge and incentives to use the product among end users.

Context

"The project will be developed in the cultivation area of Moscato d'Asti, a very large area that includes part of the provinces of Asti, Alessandria to Cuneo where the geographical differences, in terms of altitude, exposure, slope, latitude and longitude are very high . As a consequence, the area is climatically non-uniform, so that a lack of uniformity in the vegetative development and the degree of ripening of the grapes is inevitable. For this reason, to get a picture of the actual different growth and maturation of said grapes it was considered appropriate to select a good number of farms in order to involve the entire area in Moscato.
The chosen companies are distributed as follows:
- Province of Cuneo, in the Municipalities of: Castiglione Tinella, Mango, Santo Stefano Belbo, Trezzo Tinella;
- Province of Asti, in the Municipalities of: Calamandrana, Canelli, Cassinasco, Castel Rocchero, Cessole, Loazzolo, Sessame;
- Province of Alessandria, in the Municipalities of: Alice Bel Colle, Bistagno, Strevi.
The companies involved in this project were also selected based on the different type of management, being in fact a fundamental point of the project the phytosanitary defense and the decrease in the use of plant protection products, it was decided to use:
- traditional companies;
- companies that follow integrated production regulations;
- organic farms;"

Pratice abstract
Description

Design and implementation of a wireless sensor network for the collection of environmental data of the vineyard. After evaluating the distribution of the vineyards into the municipalities patecipating to the project, strategic points will be identified where the data collection equipment will be installed to improve the coverage in all the territory involved in the project.
At the same time the sensor nodes will be made and positioned in the field. The types of sensors that will be made available are:
- Double-sided leaf wetness
- Temperature and humidity of the air
- Soil temperature and humidity
- Rain gauge
- Anemometer
- Solar radiation
The sensors will be installed both within the selected vineyards in the companies involved in the project and as additions to the weather stations of the Piedmont Region.
The collected data will be used for the elaboration of phytopathological, phenological, agronomic and vegetative-productive type on both a plot and a territorial scale.

Description

This innovation consists in the release of the platform for territorial analysis of the winegrowing areas involved in the project, the platform is feeded by all the data coming from many sources implemented during the project. The weather indicators derived from the data collected will be processed to produce spatial continuity in the referenced area of the information collected and to produce the spatialization maps for the various parameters measured and calculated. It is expected to release a Web application made available to wineries to give access to all spatial data, with the classic features of GIS, and finally allow companies to directly enter field measurements.

Description

From the point of view of innovation, farms must implements practical changes into their operating procedures. Firstly they will have to provide support on the field for the evaluation of the vegetative state of the crops (phenological phases detection and field monitoring). It will also be very important to train the staff (especially for those companies that do not have particular agronomic skills), in order to correctly interpret the indications coming from the DSS platform and the project researchers.

Description

This innovation consists in the introduction of a decision support system, integrated within the platform. Based on the analyzes carried out through phytopathological infections prediction models, this system, realized through interfacing also with a prediction system made available by an external consultant, provides to the users indications that can be used directly or by technicians consultants to adopt infection defense strategies to rationalize the use of plant protection products, energy resources and water resources.
