Assessment tools of the actions for reduction of emissions in dairy farms

Obiettivi
Objectives

To develop a decision support system, that allows dairy farmer and advisers to assess, based on their shared knowledge, the level of emissions of the farm and to identify the best technical and economic mitigation techniques adapted to the specific conditions of the dairy farms.
Moreover, the project foresees the validation of some new technical and management solutions applied to the farms of the Operational Group, that potentially are able to reduce the emissions of ammonia and greenhouse gases.

Activities

Preliminary study of the production conditions of the regional dairy sector and the techniques that have an impact on emissions.
Assessment of the effect of some innovative technologies and management techniques on the level of emissions of dairy farms.
Design of a calculation tool for the estimate of dairy farm emissions.
Evaluation of the potential reduction of emissions of the regional dairy sector due to the adoption of mitigation technologies with reference to different scenarios.
Dissemination and training.

Pratice abstract
Description

The main expected results are: an improvement of the specific knowledge about emissions of dairy farms; a support to the investment decisions and the choice of the technical options to reduce the emissions of single dairy farms.
The regional dairy farms may benefit of the knowledge produced within this project, in particular about technically feasible solutions to reduce the emissions of ammonia and greenhouse gases. The research activities of the project will deepen the knowledge about housing and environmental control systems, as well as about management techniques, manure storage and spreading in dairy farms, that have a positive effect on the reduction of emissions in the atmosphere.
The innovative tool realized in this project allow the single dairy farms to carry out a selfassessment and to estimate the potential reduction of emissions related to the application of an innovative technique or a change of management.
The project finally estimates the actual emissions of the regional dairy sector and carries out an assessment of the possible reduction of emissions due to the adoption of innovative techniques with reference to different scenarios.
