PEI-AGRI

Self-control tools of nitrogen balance for the BAT application in swine husbandry

Obiettivi
Objectives

The project has the overall objective of improving social sustainability of swine husbandries in Emilia-Romagna Region through a found and proven environmental sustainability, acting in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where this sustainability has been compromised, contributing to the reduction of traditional farming activities of these agricultural areas.
The size of the husbandry in these two province often submits them to the integrated environmental authorization (AIA) and to the adoption of Best Available Techniques (BAT)to contain the emissions of gases in the atmosphere (NH3 and CH4).

Activities

The Plan aims to transfer in livestock practice the knowledge and methodologies now widely recognized from regulation and permitted as BAT to reduce atmosphere emissions ofammonia gas and the greenhouse gas. The feeding interventions, as more onerous BAT of treatment and wastewater management, can significantly limit the olfactory harassment arising from farming, and also the unwanted gases.
The decisive step that the plan want to achieve is to produce tools to document the application of BAT in animal feeding and demonstrate its effectiveness in a farm self-control system.

Pratice abstract
Description

The expected results for the Plan are nitrogen balance methodologies and tools for the calculation of excretions and yields, validated for use in self-control and shared among the stakeholders of the swine sector (including control authorities).
These go to resolve the gap identified with the specific objectives of difficulty to collect and document, effectively and at low cost, the application of BAT, to the purposes of self-control and control.
The concrete results are as follows, provided intended for fattening and breeding husbandries.
1. Methodology of nitrogen ballance statements arising from the results of research and experimentation, adapted for commercial farms and can provide the nitrogen yield output data and the amount of nitrogen excreted for defined groups (lots) of animals. This methodology will be transferred to a calculation tool, and must be tested and validated in the course of the plan.
2. Detection of the nitrogen balance for at least one year in partner farms.
3. Review the results and release of shared methods and used for self-control and recognized for control.
