Strategies for the elimination of the use of antibiotics in beef industry

Obiettivi
Objectives

The main goal of the project is to increase the profitability of the beef industry by: i) decreasing costs related to the use of antibiotics, (ii) improving animal welfare and biosafety under rearing conditions, (iii) producing a new type of beef product ('antibiotic free'), (iv) requalifying the beef industry image towards public opinion. In particular, animal welfare and biosafety, can be improved across the investigation of new management practices, dietary supplementation and strategies, in order to establish an efficient alternative to the antibiotic use.

Activities

The overall aim of the project is to enhance the profitability of farmers and reduce the use of antibiotic. The following activities will be carried out: (i) study of the use of antibiotics in the beef farms of the Veneto region (ii) study of innovative welfare, feeding and management condition to reduce the use of antibiotics (iii) identification and implementation of guidelines for the production of antibiotic free beef.

Pratice abstract
Description

The general aim of this project is to find a solution to the problem of antimicrobial resistance in intensive livestock farming. It is considered an effective strategy to limit the phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance on beef industry, which is a relevant economic sector in the Veneto region. The innovation will be pursued by setting up field experimental trials and by developing practices that allow to improve animal welfare and the biosafety during the fattening period and enhance management practices and feeding strategies in the beef farm (supplemented group feed, added with plant originated immunostimulants products). The experimental response will be evaluated collecting and analizing blood samples, feed and feces composition and average daily gain. This project will increase the profitability of farmers by decreasing the use of antibiotics and introducing a new type of beef product (“antibiotic-free”) on the market.

Description

The main goal of the project is to increase the profitability of the beef cattle farms by decreasing costs related to the use of antibiotics and requalify the beef industry image toward public opinion. It is possible improving animal welfare and biosafety under rearing conditions and producing a new type of product (“antibiotic-free”). In particular, the investigation of new management practices, dietary supplementation and dietary strategies (on selected farms) are used to draft and test a prevention protocols and procedural guidelines that will be conducted in order to establish an efficient alternative to antibiotic use.
