Yeld Stabilization of Pleurotus (YESP)
The YESP project is aimed at improving and stabilize the production system of oyster mushroom. The main goals of the research activities are: 1) identify new growing facilities useful to improve oyster mushroom production, characterized by higher potential in the climatic conditions management; 2) identify efficient combinations of organic matrices for the suitable cultivation substrates setting up without pathogens for the Pleurotus. At the same time, a sustainable management of the substrate at the end of the growing cycle will be evaluated; 3) increase the oyster mushroom shelf life by acting on innovative growing techniques and post-harvest tools.
Preparation of the operating sites with the aim of carrying out a simulation of the optimal cultivation environment for the Pleurotus where the most innovative and technological solutions will be adopted to improve and facilitate climate management in the cultivation environment by monitoring the main climatic parameters that influence the life of the mushroom (temperature, humidity and aeration).
Acquire more knowledge of the cultivation substrate, which will be evaluated during the production process to highlight its potential and problems.
Quality and post-harvest assessment during the final stages of mushroom management up to the moment of its consumption.
The horticultural production requires programming capacity and production stability for a successful marketing of products and for a suitable contractual power in relation to big retailers. These aspects are linked to the income of producers that, if placed under suitable operating conditions, are able to transform their skills into high-quality products for the consumer. These considerations are useful also for the world of mushrooms. In the last years, near the standardized cultivation of champignon mushrooms, Pleurotus has been growing in interest. The latter, however, is characterized by several problems connected to the stabilization of production. YESP project is focused on the activation of several channels aimed to identify and solve the main issues related to this field. The main actions are:
1) identify cultivation environments suitable for Pleurotus production, characterized by a greater potential and easy management of climatic conditions;
2) identify efficient combinations of organic matrices for the preparation of suitable Pleurotus substrates and find a sustainable management at the end of growing cycle;
3) increase the shelf-life of the product by acting on innovative cultivation and post-harvest techniques.
The GO aims to solve the above-mentioned issues in order to provide useful tools and knowledges to producers improving the Pleurotus production.
