Decision support system to select cover crops in Lombardia
To extend over time and space the impact of the results obtained so far on cover crops, to integrate them in a unique platform, and to increase their accessibility for end users in plain areas of the Lombardia Region, this project aims to create a decision support system (DSS) that provides the user with advice on the species of cover crop to sow based on the context in which it operates, on the best sowing time and method, and on the time and method of termination, based on a specific pedoclimatic and cropping system situation.
The development of the DSS will be based on data obtained from: 1) field experiments to quantify cover crop production in the absence of water and nutrient limitations; 2) synthesis of the scientific literature on cover crops, conducted with natural language analysis techniques, integrated with the work of expert agronomists; 3) simulations with a cropping system model to respond to knowledge needs not explored by scientific publications; 4) interaction with farmers and other stakeholders external to the operational group, who will provide contributions to make the DSS applicable to conditions as diversified as possible.
