PEI-AGRI

Breeding Varroa resistant bees

Obiettivi
Objectives

The project aims to make a contribution to the control of the bee parasite Varroa Destructor through an approach based on the genetic resistance of bees to the parasite, integrating the measurement of the phenotype and its association with genetic and genomic data. The phenotype will be detected by quantifying the natural ability of the colonies to detect and interrupt the reproductive cycle of the parasite. The experimentation involves the use of insemination with a single drone and the controlled artificial infestation of the colonies with Varroa.
The selected genetics will be made available to Lombard beekeepers in the mating area (ADA) created by the GO in Val Bodengo (SO).

Activities

The selection for bees resistant to Varroa will be developed through a precise quantification of the phenotype using the Harbo test, with which it is possible to quantify the natural ability of the colonies to contain the mite infestation. The phenotype will be detected on colonies led by artificially inseminated queens and exposed in a controlled way to the parasite infestation, to achieve rapid genetic progress. The phenotypic and genealogical data will be processed to index the colonies not only on a phenotypic but genetic basis. Individuals will also be sampled in each colony to have complete genomic information to associate with individual phenotypes.
