PEI-AGRI

Sustainable production of high quality flat peaches and nettarines from Marche region

Obiettivi
Objectives

1) To reduce the environmental impact of flat peache production throughout the introduction of resilient cultivars and sustainable management techniques.
2) To increase health-giving and quality of the products by reducing chemical residues and by providing indication for best consumption.
3) To characterize biochemical and nutritional properties and to select varieties with the
greatest healing and nutraceutical properties. To valorize fruit quality by indicating the best time for consuming, and by adopting labels and packages explicating production processes and product value.

Activities

The project aims to strengthen the presence in the market of flat peaches and nectarines made in Marche throughout low environmental impact techniques. The new varieties will be tested at the Eleuteri company and at the IRTA research institute in Spain, in order to determine the most interesting for production in Marche region. The Moscatelli company will host the demonstration fields in which the proposed agronomic technical innovations will be applied. The Biomedfood spinoff and the two departments of UNIVPM involved will monitor the evolution of the qualitative parameters of the fruit in post-harvest, transmitted with indications such as the "RipeSense®" label.

Context

Italy is the second largest producer of peaches in the EU. On a market that shows critical elements: first of all the reduction in sales prices that in 2017 did not cover production costs. In the face of a globalised and competitive market, high-end products are a resource that guarantees greater margins in the face of a higher technical commitment. Among the high-end products, the sector of peaches is growing steadily, with a +12% on an annual basis recorded in 2017. In this sector the Marche Region represents the second national producer and can boast a well established brand on the market. The sustainability of the sector has crucial aspects related to the need to expand the production window to strengthen customer loyalty with the introduction of earlier and later varieties with a high quality standard. These are varieties that the world of experimentation has already made available and evaluated (eg.IRTA research centre in Lleida) but which need to be evaluated in the Marche production context. The evaluation covers agronomic and productive aspects but also qualitative with particular reference to nutritional characteristics and nutraceutical and health properties.

Pratice abstract
Description

Introduction of resilient palticarpe varieties suitable for low-impact or organic crops.

Description

Product enhancement with indication on the label of the ideal moment for consumption: “RipeSense®”system. The adoption will require the definition of the moment of maximum expression of the properties of the product.

Description

Anti-drip nets for plant protection against fisiopathies and insect nets, which nectarines platicarpe (in particular nectarines) need to reduce the use of plant protection products. The networks will have an innovative system of partial double coverage, for the optimal conditioning of the microclimate and adaptability to the plants in use.

Description

The use of photoselective red nets, already tested successfully on peach and apricot, intended to induce an advance in production.

Description

Living parcels for sustainable land management adopted in many organic contexts (ref. DOMINO project).

Description

Creation of a label/pack/exhibitor“speaker” with graphic and digital content that enhances the nutritional value of the product.
