PEI-AGRI

PRODUCE HEMP IN THE FOOD AND AGRO INDUSTRIAL CHAIN

Obiettivi
Objectives

Testing varieties both in terms of cultivation techniques and qualitative-quantitative evaluation of hemp crop.Adapting of the existing mechanical equipment for the collection. Organizing a network of producers to ensure the efficiency in production, logistics and business expenses to relate to the supply chain.Experimental tests with zootechnical transformation of products derived from hemp, are realized in order to verify their composition and the relationship between nutrients of high nourishing value. The Project develops environmental objectives for the reduction of the use of fertilizers, the elimination of chemical herbicides and a significant increase in the absorption of CO2

Activities

The activities of the Project consist of: -agronomical and productive experimental tests on various hemp cultivars and technological   adaptations the combine harvester and seed drying systems  -Analytical investigation of the chemical, physical and nutritional contents of the different parts of the hemp plant to verify the quality standards required by the supply chains- Experimental tests with the zootechnical transformation of products derived from hemp are realized in order to verify composition and the relationship between nutrients of high nourishing value.
Communication and training, are carried on through a specific programme to transfer basic knowledge about hemp crop

Pratice abstract
Description

The project of the Operating Group proposes to effectively connect into a network the agricultural enterprises interested in this new cultivation, with the participation of partners specialized in the varietal research on hemp and in its zootechnical transformation. The project purposes to effectively reconstruct the hemp production chain by tackling the problems of agromechanical process, food processing and agro-industrial transformation of the different parts of the plant, to improve productivity and competitiveness. The project aims to reintroduce this crop in the agricultural area of the Veneto plain, adapting its agronomic techniques and first processing processes. The varieties that best match the soil and environmental characteristics and the purposes of the various final transformations of the product are tested. The project is realized in collaboration with the CREA CI, industrial crops research center in Rovigo (Consiglio per la Ricerca in Agricoltura e analisi dell'Economia Agraria). Moreover, the Plan aims to characterize in the analytical and qualitative terms the products of hemp, for a more precise definition and for the enhancement of their food value and of their potential in different  transformations. The realization of this Project fits with the objectives of a sustainable agricultural production which plays a role in counteracting climate change through high levels of CO2 absorption and a reduction of chemical treatments.

Description

The Operating Group Plan provides for the evaluation of the use of hemp in zootechnical transformation in collaboration with the Department of Biomedicina Comparata e Alimentazione of the University of Padua. The Plan aims to characterize the hemp products in analytical and qualitative terms, for a definition of their food value in zootechnical processing, applied to the breeding of white meat calves. The results will allow the formulation of the solid feed for calves and the definition of the inclusion levels of hemp flour. The use of hemp products in zootechnical feeding is tested in a pilot farm, to evaluate the infra vitam and post mortem production performance of calves reared. The feed are used at different levels of hemp flour than those that receive a control feed (without hemp).  In addition, assessments are planned in the behavior of the calves in the boxes to check for any changes in the activities of the animals themselves. The Project will explain whether the inclusion of hemp flour in lactation feeds for white meat calves can provide positive results in terms of production performance and animal welfare. These results can also be applied on livestock farms in different environmental and management conditions
