Genetic improvement of the Italian Simmenthal replacement heifers finalized to increase animal welfare, economic and environmental sustainability
The goals of the project are:
• Increase the comeback carrying innovative genetic characteristics
• Increase genetic exchange and reduce inbreeding of herds
• Increase the reliability of genetic and genomic assessments
• Retrieve genetic material from donors at the end of their career
• Increase animal welfare, profitability and reduce the environmental impact of farms
• To characterize the genetic improvement of the Italian Simmenthal according to local objectives, using the female (prestigious cows raised in the region) way and male as well.
• Develop innovative phenotypic indicators thanks to clinical and endocrine evaluations carried out at the laboratories of the University of Udine.
The main activities of the project are:
- Develop clinical and endocrine evaluation criteria for donor and recipient cows and selection of the most fertile and resilient animals
- Application of the "Multiple ovulation and embryo transfer" method on selected animals in order to obtain embryos from donor cows, to be transferred to the receiving cows
- Analysis of the results obtained and their dissemination, in particular for breeders, technicians and veterinarians
