Non chemical weed control in vineyard

Obiettivi
Objectives

The objective is to reduce herbicides application in the vineyard and increase soil fertility. Therefore, the innovation consists of a self-reseeding cover crop cultivation under the vineyard rows in order to reduce glyphosate use and tillage intensity; this management strategy would allow environment impact reduction and production cost saving

Activities
  • Subterranean clover seeding in late summer under the rows using a prototype seeder; the biomass of the clover will cover the soil in autumn, winter and spring as living mulch, and in summer as dead mulch.
  • At the end of summer the clover seed will spontaneously germinate and a new biological cycle will start under the row to contrast weed emergence and to improve soil fertility.
  • A comparison between chemical herbicide and “bi-herbicide” will be carried out on demand in the conventional farms where chemical herbicides are regularly applied.
Context

Vineyards weed control in Tuscany is mainly based on mechanical treatments between rows and herbicide application (glyphosate in particular) under the row. The application of alternative soil and weed management systems focused on external input, soil fertility conservation and cost saving, could improve conventional and organic viticulture sustainability in Tuscany. Cover crops (CC) cultivation represents an efficient tool for the application of such strategies. These herbaceous species are cultivated in the period between the harvest of a crop and the sowing of the successive crop in rotation in order to maintain the soil covered by vegetation and consequently reduce soil water erosion and weed presence
