Organic farming innovations to improve sustainability of Apulia farms for cereal and industrial crops
The main objective of the proposal is the development of an agro-ecological model based on the
rotation of the main Apulian herbaceous crops (durum wheat, legumes and tomato from industry) to be transferred to local organic farms to increase productivity and environmental sustainability. To
pursue this objective, it will be essential to evaluate the environmental, economic and social
sustainability of the proposed model and the introduction of an Apulian Organic Business Network.
The Project is divided into three essential activities:
1. Development and optimization of a Wheat / Legume / Tomato rotation model by adopting
technical means
2. Selection of wheat varieties suitable for the organic production method, also in view of their
greater adaptability to climate change.
3. The environmental feasibility of the proposed production model will be assessed through an
LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) approach. An economic assessment will be made with a relationship
between costs, revenues and indications on economic margins at different price scenarios The social
sustainability of the innovations introduced will finally be assessed
