PEI-AGRI

Innovation biotechnology to support a breeder net of ornamental plants in west liguria

Obiettivi
Objectives

The following objectives will be pursued: a) creation of a biotechnological platform for ornamental plants; b) creation of a private public partnership to strengthen the hybridization work; c) reinforcement of synergies to achieve a higher quality product in less time. The companies identified in the first phase, interested in the field of biotechnological innovation in support of traditional breeding, will create a G.O. private individuals will integrate their knowledge, resources and needs with the knowledge resources of public research in order to reduce hybridization times for the benefit of the entire ornamental sector.

Activities

There are 6 actions identified as follows: 1-coordination; 2-analysis of business processes and optimization (a-verification of company procedures to identify the sectors of intervention, b-coordination activities of company personnel by CREA researchers); 3-use of in vitro methodology platforms (species: Anemone, Garofano, Ortensia, Ranuncolo, Rosa, Salvia); technological innovations: embryo rescue, androgenesis, pollen conservation, mutagenesis, polyploidization; 4-feasibility study of an approach in molecular biology supporting genetic knowledge; 5-NRN disclosure; 6-disclosure to companies.

Context

"Ligurian floriculture has deep roots and still today represents an important voice of the regional agricultural economy; Liguria is in turn the first Italian region in nursery gardening.
Among the historical reasons for this record, the favorable climate was certainly fundamental, but the great genius of the Ligurians who gave rise to a line of highly specialized floriculturists who, not content with cultivating with wisdom, have soon engaged. started a century ago to improve flower varieties with patient hybridization work.
Obviously the Ligurian territory would never have allowed the development of large companies of extensive production, and therefore the only possibility of our farmers was to specialize in the art and science of what can be considered an economic activity at great risk , research in agriculture in a niche chain such as the nursery.
To a clear need, that is the need to profit from inhospitable lands, our floriculturists have responded over two or three generations by developing very high quality productions and, above all, selecting new hybrids, in competition with those coming from abroad. New """" Ligurian """" hybrids have been gradually obtained over the years and, precisely because they are hybridized and selected in our land, they have often exceeded foreign competitors as they are perfectly suited to cultivation in our climate. Ligurian hybridisers have created and passed down through the generations a real """" movement """" that has reached great levels of professionalism on many important crops in our region, such as carnation, rose, ranunculus, anemone.

Pratice abstract
Description

Application of a system of analysis of business processes related to the technique of genetic improvement to identify inhibiting bottle necks in the light of the possible innovative technologies. This approach will allow to improve the quality of work and, at the same time, to obtain new genetic material with a greater quality control in itinere, through the genetic markers that will be developed.

Description

Creation of a platform of innovative methodologies pertaining to the biotechnology sector to support the work of genetic improvement of ornamental plant breeders in western Liguria. Companies will be able to make use of the skills of the researchers of the organization involved and of their own shared experiences, to face the most stringent nodes of the breeding process, finding suitable solutions to guarantee a saving of genetic improvement times with consequent reduction of the overall cost of the processes.
