PEI-AGRI

Innovation in two spotted spider mite pest control in tomato supply chain

Obiettivi
Objectives

The main objective of the project is to test new and innovative pest management strategies against the two spotted spider mite for the supply chain of tomato for industrial transformation. The goals of the plan agree with PEI-AGRI topics as they want to achieve advances in pest management through the development of new diagnostic instruments to improve phytosanitary products use, empowering an agricultural production shaped by environmental impact reduction, biodiversity enhancement, beneficials and pollinators protection

Activities
  • Preparation of a questionnaire to evaluate the phytosanitary situation and the two spotted spider mite management strategies.
  • Update of phytosanitary guidelines against the tomato two spotted spider mite.
  • Activities on farms to compare the efficacy of traditional strategies against new guidelines.
  • Tetranychus urticae population composition, dynamics and pesticide resistance mechanisms and impact on pest management.

Description

The objective of the project is to develop and to test new and innovative pest management strategies against the two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) for the supply chain of tomato for industrial transformation. The advances in pest management will be achieved improving the use of phytosanitary products, empowering an agricultural production shaped by environmental impact reduction, biodiversity enhancement, beneficials and pollinators protection. The expected results are: the development and dissemination of updated and effective phytosanitary guidelines to control the two spotted red spider mite in the tomato supply chain and a correct implementation of pest management strategies, applying only those of confirmed efficacy, that will decrease the risk of phytosanitary product residue presence and that will prevent the onset of acaricide resistant population of Tetranychus urticae.
