PEI-AGRI

Young in the field

Obiettivi
Objectives

The general aim of the project is to increase employment through the creation of agricultural cooperatives of young people and / or associations that grow products from the cereal supply chain, especially ancient grains, on unused or underused public or private land.

So we try to increase employment, especially for young people, in the Alto e Medio Sele areas and neighboring areas of the Province of Salerno, through the recovery of marginal land, with the creation of supply chains rooted in the territory, with the maintenance of the biodiversity of the products of the supply chain cereals from the Campania Region.

Other expected results: reduction of hydrogeological instability, improvement of the agricultural landscape, promotion of diversification.

Results
  • Wheat Ecotypes Selection: Risciola and Carosella (soft) - Senatore Cappelli and Saragolla (hard)
  • Drafting of Guidelines for the Cultivation of Grains
  • Experimental evidence has shown that appropriate radiative treatments offer the possibility of sanitizing seeds without compromising characteristics such as germination and other chemical-physical properties.
  • Memorandum of Understanding "Terre dei Parchi" Project

Results that can be transferred to companies include:

  • Protocols for the organic cultivation of ancient grains
  • Promotion of the knowledge and technical feasibility of the post-harvest stabilization method of grains through the use of microwave-assisted heating (equipment, process conduction in a safe and effective way)

It is important to highlight that microwave heating technology has characteristics of easy scalability and continuous process management, requires relatively inexpensive installations;  It responds to the sustainable process requirements promoted in the current UN 2030 Agenda socio-economic policy framework for responsible production approaches.

Activities
  • Identification of varieties and / or ecotypes of grains to be cultivated;
  • Support for the creation of youth cooperatives;
  • Training activities for young people involved in the project;
  • Development of the network of Public Entities and Municipalities owning uncultivated or underused land interested in the project;
  • Start of experimental cultivation of land;
  • Evaluation of the different flours obtained;
  • Realization of process innovations in the processing of products;
  • Dissemination of the model to young farmers and Municipalities belonging to the network;
  • Dissemination of results at small farms interested in productive diversification / conversion.
Context

The intervention will be carried out in the Province of Salerno, in the areas of the hills of the Alto Sele and Val Calore which have an ancient and consolidated tradition of growing cereals and in particular wheat.

There are many underutilized and abandoned lands. Currently the land destined for cereal growing (wheat, barley, oats and corn) amounts to 2,950 Ha (they are located in the municipalities of Oliveto C., Palomonte, Colliano and Contursi T.) and represent about 20% of the entire cereal area of the province of Salerno.

There are no large grain companies but the cultivation of wheat is practiced by many companies, some of which grow wheat using directly selected seed. There are still many companies that produce wheat for self-consumption.

In the province of Salerno, at the beginning of the 1900s, numerous local ecotypes were cultivated, each adapted to the particular soil and climatic conditions of the cultivation area.

These "ancient" varieties, in an organic cultivation system, have recently shown to have a competitive yield with modern varieties, due to the willingness of consumers to pay a higher price for healthy products.

These productions have in fact been shown to produce significant beneficial effects, such as reduced development of allergies (such as celiac disease) and reduction of chronic cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, (source Sofi et al, 2010) for products made from whole wheat due to the presence , in wheat kernels, of different classes of phytochemical compounds, such as fibers and antioxidants (phenolic acids, flavonoids).

According to the 2017 ISMEA-SVIMEZ REPORT, southern agriculture is the youngest in Italy and reversing the trend has become attractive to young people. In the overall data of the South, Campania is still struggling, but it has a potential for young people who are still waiting to show their value.
