PEI-AGRI

Water and nitrogen integrated managment by different irrigation

Obiettivi
Objectives

1.Improve the irrigation water efficiency for the high irrigation demanding crops;
2.Decrease significantly the irrigation water use for open field herbaceous crops and fruit trees;
3.Improve the nitrogen fertilization efficiency;
4.Develop the financial and technical system for the open field crops farms, planning specific solutions on the business resources;
5.Demonstrate the possible use of new systems in crops management;

Activities

The new system is based on the soil moisture measurement calibration systems in the different types of soils and on the database creation to develop an application for smartphones. It will follow few simple inputs for any farms (soil classification, soil moisture, type of crop, phenological stage), that can indicate to the farms the right time for irrigation.The Nutrient recycling focus group identifies, among the priorities, an efficient use of digestate, byproduct of the anaerobic digestion of vegetable matrix (biogas plants).

Pratice abstract
Description

Limited water efficiency has important consequences also on the nitrogen fertilization, as it is related to the percolation of nitrates in the soil. On the other hand, the technology provides tools to measure irrigation parameters at decreasing costs: the great interests for companies that irrigate herbaceous open field crops (especially corn) to have a professional system able to provide a well timely support, on the parameters based and measured in the field, the Water and Nitrogen Integrated Management with different Irrigation Methods (GIAcAMI).
This system will be tested on recently planted walnuts: these fruit trees cultivation have a strong growing trend in Veneto region, and are recently planted by several farms to diversify produced crops. The Group aims to improve the irrigation water and nitrogen use efficiency on crops that have high water irrigation and nitrogen fertilization demand (maize, walnut). Irrigation and nitrogen fertilization represent an increasingly important agronomic combination for farmers.
The new system is based on the soil moisture measurement calibration systems in the different types of soils and on the database creation to develop an application for smartphones. It will follow few simple inputs for any farms (soil classification, soil moisture, type of crop, phenological stage), that can indicate to the farms the right time for irrigation.
