Organic cereals supply chain 4.0

Obiettivi
Objectives

The purpose is to make the agronomic management of the Marche’s organic cereal farms more efficient through precision farming technologies and the digitization of the supply chain. This practice requires the use of digital support systems with the consequent possibility to monitor the variables in the agricultural environment through sensors installed in the ground/satellite/drones and soil mapping, very important to identify the characteristics of the terroir and understand the products that can offer the best yield.

Activities

The project consists in testing a Decision Support System (DSS) designed specifically for organic farms. At the same time, a Geographic Information System (GIS) will be used, which will allow to combine maps, perform statistical analysis and manage data through database technologies. The DSS is a tool capable of providing additional assistance and information, to support and not to replace the farmer in the choice of decisions regarding the management of organic crops. The service will allow a considerable improvement in the use of resources at company level.

Context

Raising the level of sustainability in agriculture is becoming an increasingly important target for operators, given the need to contain costs to protect the income on one hand and that of increasing the protection of environmental resources on the other. Furthermore, in an increasingly global context, the need to maintain high levels of competitiveness in the adopted production process is indicated by several parties as a fundamental requirement for operators to stay on the market. An answer to these needs may come from the adoption of an agriculture 4.0, which in Italy meets various obstacles. The opportunities that this kind of agriculture can offer to farms are many and can range in different fields, from production, with increased efficiency, to protection of the environment thanks to the reduction of chemical inputs. There will also be benefits to the supply chain, thanks to the improvement of quality, and will bring economic advantages in terms of savings.
