Can we add value to Pomegranate crops by processing and short chain?
The general objectives of the project concern the creation of value for the pomegranate chain produced by crops located in the Veneto area. This will be achieved through the implementation of the chain of an innovative product, the arils of the pomegranate ready-to-eat, to be placed, at startup, on the domestic market where there is currently no offer similar products in the retail market. The aim of the project is to realize and perfect the process of fruit processing (garnishing) on a medium to small scale, to gather the market elements of consumer behavior necessary to develop an effective marketing proposal to obtain a profitable commercial collocation.
The activities of the Project Scheme are organized in three WPs:
WP-A: The study of the market, consumer preferences and the chain, which will lead to the definition of a strategic and operational marketing plan for the placement of innovative product in the market;
WP-B: The layout of the pomegranate processing lay out in fresh-fruited arils, developing smallscale processing plants;
WP-C: Testing of the system that will validate the pre-series layout useful for the dissemination of innovation.
The aim of the project is to develop a local supply chain for an innovative product, the pomegranate arils. The project is characterized by an integrated approach, involving as main actors: (i) Agromania Sca, that associates pomegranate producers and owns know-how for product transformation; (ii) The University of Padua, able to perform a market study for pomegranate arils chain.
The main result is the layout for pomegranate arils production developing an automatic serial system, suitable for small local scale.
Advantages for farmers and for the chain are: i) an increase in added value by offering a differentiated product; ii) the positioning of the product into an expanding market segment. The new system can be immediately transferred to fruit producers at regional, national and EU scale.
