Intelligent Terroir of Sannio - Innovations for a Resilient Falanghina

Obiettivi
Objectives

The general objectives of the INNFARES project are:

  • Experimenting with an adaptive management model of the Falanghina vineyards that can mitigate the effects of climate change on the vines, safeguarding the quality of the wines.
  • Define the communication contents for the market enhancement of Falanghina wines with attributes of resilience and sustainability.
Activities

Activities:

  • WP1:Project operational and general administrative coordination
  • WP2: Creation and management of the network of homogeneous areas of reference ("Green Laboratories" about “Falanghina of Sannio PDO”). *(PDO: Protected Designation of Origin).
  • WP3: Development of innovative tools for monitoring and adaptive management of the information relating to the viticultural heritage of “Falanghina of Sannio”
  • WP4:  Creation of an organizational system to support the decisions of the wineries
  • WP5: Measurement of environmental and economic sustainability and willingness to pay for resilient Falanghina
  • WP6:  Dissemination actions
Context

The province of Benevento is the first in Campania for the production of wine grapes, with Falanghina taking on a fundamental role both economically and territorially (2,261.6 hectares for the province of Benevento, 80% of the  Regional area in 2017), as the leading product of the Samnite wine system. The distinctiveness of Falanghina is linked to a terroir, exclusive for natural and anthropic elements, whose components determine a unique and unrepeatable quality of wines in other contexts. These potentials, however, are now conditioned by climate changes which are negatively affecting the phenology of the vines and, therefore, the quality of the wines. Moreover another critical point is the poor knowledge of some basic characteristics of the Falanghina grape such as: physiology, the ability to accumulate sugars, the acidic profile and the wine yeasts present on the grapes vary within the same Samnite territory depending on the area. The persistence of this knowledge deficit and the absence of measures to mitigate the effects of climate change could generate negative synergies such as to compromise the competitiveness of companies and determine the crisis of this grape variety. Starting from the results of the LIFE project, the INNFARES project aims at mitigation of the effects of climate change on Falanghina and the continuous optimization of production, through the creation of a Decision Support System based on an intelligent network capable of monitoring and provide real-time management assistance to wine growers.
