Decision support to sustainable forest planning
The Strategic Plan proposed by the SURF Operational Group – Decision Support System for Sustainable Forest Management - aims to implement a Decision Support System (DSS) in pilot areas based on spatial modeling to support sustainable forest management on a local scale. New spatial modeling technologies appropriately based on the integration of field data and from remote sensing, will be used for the creation of the DSS accessible through a simple and intuitive on-line platform.
SURF will provide data for sustainable forest management contributing to reduce costs in companies and, in the pilot areas, will develop a prototype forest map on a typological basis. The DSS will be used to demonstrate the possibility of launching forms of sustainable forest management that are more adapted to the complex problem of maximizing production of ecosystem services. 12 workshops are also planned for those who participate in the authorization processes and in the control of the territory and a series of thematic meetings at companies and other local players aimed at disseminating the proposed methodology and a specific communication project.
The woods, if properly managed on the basis of sustainability criteria are able to provide a wide range of ecosystem services, some with a direct financial value, such as wood production or the assimilation of greenhouse gases, others more difficult to monetize, such as the mitigation of hydrogeological risks, the protection of biodiversity or the socio/cultural and landscape value. The current forest planning tools generally identify objectives and strategies of the forest sector but do not provide operational tools to support the forest owner for company-scale management.

The System aims to provide estimates of essential data for sustainable forest management taken from information already available, such as, for example, those acquired in the national forest inventory, thus contributing to reducing the costs of ordinary forest management in all forest properties, in particularly in private ones. Furthermore, the project in the pilot areas aims to develop a prototype of forest mapping on a typological basis.
