Innovative strategies to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases and ammonia in the animal farming systems

Obiettivi
Objectives

The main aims of the plan are: 1) to quantify the emission of greenhouse gases and ammonia in farms representative of the production condition of the region; 2) to develop simplified procedures to estimate the emission at farm level;  3) To define a set of good practices, including manure and slurry treatments, to reduce the emission at farm level;  4) to make extension service spreading the information acquired with this project to the operators and the farmers, including specific educational activities.

Activities

Public opinion and institutions are putting an increased attention to the environmental impact resulting from animal farming. Major concerns regard the consumption of energy, feed, and water, together with the emission in atmosphere of greenhouse gases, such as methane and ammonia. These substances are produced during the process of manure production, storage, processing and distribution. The plan proposed with this action aims to improve some management process and to develop innovative tools to reduce the emission of these gases. The management model will be based on the regional condition of production.

Pratice abstract
Description

During the first year (on going), the farms to be sampled have been identified (30 of dairy cows, 23 of beef cattle, 17 of pig – either reproductive or fattening phases, 15 of broilers), the questionnaires have been prepared in order to collect information about the farm management and production (productive input for herd and crop management and productive output such as milk and surplus animals) and the data collection in the farms has been performed. Data recorded will be used in a Life Cycle Assessment model for the assessment of the emissions of greenhouse gases and ammonia. The expected results for each animal production system will be the impact value (per unit of product, eg. kg ammonia per 1 kg milk), the analysis of the impact contribution due to each production stage and the analysis of the farm factors that could lead to a mitigation of the impact. Besides, during the first year, protocols for the use of inhibitors of nitrification and/or of urease in slurry manure will be established. The expected result is a reduction in the ammonia volatilization from manure after spreading on agricultural soil.
