Improvement of forage systems in support of the production of pdo parmigiano reggiano cheese "product of the mountain" in the valleys of the apennine

Objectives

Improving the feed management of dairy cows for Parmigiano Reggiano farms associated in the Social Dairy San Giorgio, especially to get the most nutritional value from the forages included in the ration. This plan aims to support the production of milk for farms that have already embarked on a path of exploitation of their Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese Mountain product, but need to strengthen the segment upstream of the transformation, ie the agricultural and livestock production.

Results

The results obtained focused on improving forage (hay and fresh grasses) production and its good use in cow rationing, results obtained with a mix of technical / demonstrative interventions:
- list of varieties and ecotypes of most productive alfalfa and suitable for providing quality fodder in the pedoclimatic conditions of the cultivable areas of the Tassobbio river area. In this regard, the aim is also to characterize ecotypes that have adapted and selected in the same areas.
- indications on the most productive alternative to Italian reygrass in the climatic zone of the mountain, for the constitution of specialized herbaceous plants and / or to enrich the old medical practitioners of direct-seeding grasses, competitive with the spontaneous ones.
- Improvement of the self-supply of dry matter of the ration from the mountain area;
- the quality of the fodder produced and the programming of its use to maximize the digestibility of the ration and minimum the food cost.
The practical technical results were appreciated by the partners of the operating group mainly related to a dairy factor and different expressions of interest arrived from the other farms of the district

  • Cooperation and sharing of information, data and resources among the project participants needed to project activities;
  • tests comparing varieties and ecotypes of alfalfa and wheat in feed improvement of forage production in the mountain climate area and its good use in rationing of cows;
  • application of the innovations proposed in the company as a good management practices  and agricultural engineering and efficiency of food ration for dairy cows;
  • raise awareness and inform stakeholders through training and dissemination activities

Description

The plan for innovation concerns the transfer of knowledge from research and the development of good practice to improve forage production and its good use in rationing of cows, in particular:
- list of varieties and ecotypes of alfalfa more productive and capable of providing quality forage in the soil and climatic conditions of the Tassobbio area. The aim is to also characterize ecotypes adapted and selected in the same areas. A possible additional result could be a support to the strengthening of link between fodder and milk, then with the cheese, due to the use of one or more ecotypes of alfalfa "of Tassobbio valley";
- information on forage crops alternatives to ryegrass in the climate of the mountain range, for the establishment of specialized grasslands and / or to enrich the old alfalfa meadows with grass, competitive with spontaneous one;
- improving self-sufficiency of dry matter of the ration from the mountain;
- the quality of forage and the planning of their use in order to maximise the digestibility of the ration and its minimum feed cost;
- raise awareness and inform stakeholders through training and dissemination activities.

Results

The main activities carried out by OG "Latteria San Giorgio" was: cooperation; implementation for the actions: 1-Comparative test trials between: varieties and ecotypes of lucerne; forage by wheat and 2-Application of the innovations proposed in the dairy farms. The project also included an articulated Dissemination Plan and the training of the owners of the partner dairy farms through the "Coaching" tool envisaged by the Emilia-Romagna Region.
The project starting from the kick-off meeting was characterized by the active collaboration of the technical partners with the dairy farms of primary production that compose the OG.
The OG "Latteria San Giorgio" has developed a series of actions to support mountain hay production. Work has been done on:
- sowing on land due to limitation of soil tillage - preserves the soil carbon stock and widens the time window for sowing;
- alfalfa local ecotypes - assessed for longevity and biomass supplied in the mountains;
- introduction with seeding on forage of forage wheat and mixtures to increase and lengthen the unitary production.
A specific activity made it possible to understand the real nutritional value of hay when fed to the cows. The the OG "Latteria San Giorgio" received great and active participation from all partners, the results of the project were fully satisfactory; the success of the dissemination activity was confirmed by the interest aroused also by other dairy industries of the district has demonstrated the centrality of the issues treated, strategic for the development of Parmigiano Reggiano "Prodotto di Montagna". The Coaching activities carried out by the breeders were much appreciated and the technical information exchanges provided with a spirit of gratuitousness continue today.
