PEI-AGRI

The sustainable rice that respects the environment and enhances the efforts of rice growers

Obiettivi
Objectives

Aims of the project are:
• Diffusion of the agronomic techniques aimed to increase resources efficiency and environmental sustainability through the use of demonstration sites;
• Introduction of practices able to guarantee protection, restore and maintenance of high natural value sites;
• Use of techniques aimed at maintaining or improving the final product quality, with particular reference to contaminants.

Activities

The activities of the project are: coordination, monitoring, identification of agronomic and naturalistic techniques that can be implemented in the rice farm, training, dissemination, definition of “Riso Amico+” production guidelines and opening of a dedicated website. The increase of farmer’s knowledge on the main cultivation practices aimed at reducing the environmental impact of rice cultivation will be achieved through the introduction in the farms of some innovative techniques. The production certification will permit to promote the rice production obtained with reduced environmental impact and with an increase of the naturalistic value of the rice environment.

Context

The context is represented by farms that see in the challenge of the environmental and naturalistic sustainability the key to remain on the market in the long term, differentiating themselves thanks to the adoption of production guidelines that the project will provide. The project Riso Amico+ will build a sustainable rice production chain able to protect the environment and enhance the commitment and sensitivity of rice growers. The demonstration fields of the main sustainable agricultural practices adopted by the farms will provide useful information to other rice growers and to all the stakeholders in the rice chain who see an increasing need to introduce innovations to improve the competitiveness of their productions. The project is also part of a context in which consumers demand for healthier food produced with sustainable techniques and able to valorize local products. The production guidelines will assure consumers the respect of production techniques with low environmental impact. Moreover, the project is in agreement with the current European and national regulations which require the application of integrated pest management techniques to reduce the use of pesticides with the aim of protecting the human health and the environment. The project objectives of increasing the biodiversity and the natural value of rice fields allow to increase the ecosystem services of the rice area offered to citizens who are increasingly sensitive to the maintenance of the landscape value of the agricultural environment.
