Sustainable hazelnut cultivation in Basilicata region
The main objective of the project is to stimulate the cultivation of the hazel in all the vocated areas of Basilicata region by transferring agricultural management innovations already consolidated in fruit growing, optimizing production processes in the field, obtaining sustainable and excellent productions, diversifing and integrating income, while assessing possible landscape scenarios and socio-economic-environmental-energetic sustainability.
This project aims to:
- to spread low environmental impact horticultural technologies with high efficiency in hazelnut orchards placed under different pedoclimatic areas of Basilicata;
- to evaluate the vegeto-productive responses of hazel subjected to different innovative crop technologies;
- to evaluate the vocationality to hazel coltivation within the different pedoclimatic areas considered;
- to produce hazelnuts of high technological quality, meeting market requirements;
- to encourage the diffusion of hazel in Basilicata as a profitable and alternative crop to the existing ones;
- to spread structured and repeatable farming management models.
Increasing of surfaces cutivated with hazel in vocated areas as identified by the project, or in areas with crops in crisis;
Hazel cultivation response to Basilicata climate conditions;
Changes in the farming system;
Variations of landscape scenarios in the vocated areas;
Increase of farmer income;
Adopting practices (eg mobile chicken) to integrate farmer income;
Adopting virtuous practices (eg composting on farms) for the disposal of organic wastes (crop residues, livestock manure, pruning material);
Reduction of environmental impacts linked to the agronomic management of the hazelnut orchards (reduction of erosion, increase of CO2 storage by the orchards system, etc.);
Increasing regional production;
Improvement of harvest logistics in favor of product quality;
Improving the quality of production and diversifying the product according to its intended use;
Increase in marketing flows from the region;
Improvement of the conditions of association between the actors of the hazelnut chain;
Improving the social conditions of the populations within the involved areas and mitigating the phenomenon of depopulation;
Collection of historical-social information on the cultivation of hazelnuts in Basilicata, as a pre-requisite for any request for recognition of the PGI trademark (linkage to the territory);
Sustainability assessment - in the broad sense - of production processes.
