AlpFeed: innovation to feeding by precision zootechnics in the pre-Alpine-mountain area via Near-Infra-Red (NIR) technologies

Obiettivi
Objectives

Nitrogen waste management, water management, food management and animal wellbeing for cattle in prealpine-mountain area are linked  together. Via an innovative, real time measurement of animal wastes through NIR techologies, it's possible to optimize dietary assumption for each animal, thus reducing nitrogen pollution, water consumption and costs, while increasing animal wellbeing and production.

Activities

Find and validate parameters for NIR technology to operate in prealpine-mountain regions. Then, the NIR instrument will be inserted on a test feeding mixer wagon, for practical tests. Then all results will be validated from the point of view of: (a) animal wellbeing; (b) enviromental improvements; (c) economic results along the production chain.

Pratice abstract
Description

The project will results in an easy to operate NIR instrument able to analyze cattle wastes and modify in real time the feeding mix of each animal. In this way, a farmer could easily optimize the feeding process. This will results in a series of competitive advantages for the agricultural company (reduction of costs, about 5-10%, improvement in animal wellbeing, better quality of products), and an overall improvement of environment, via a better management of nitrogen in wastes and water consumption. Those are all fundamental aspects for animal husbandry in mountain areas.
